The over the top method is really the closest to the actual weight. But when they are under 400 pounds I use both methods and usually split the difference. If the pumpkin has more squash in it I go toward the highest number. If the pumpkin has all orange and sounds more hallow I go toward the smaller number. Both are most times within 10 %.
