Even though you are running virus protection software, it cannot detect the viruses until the infected email is downloaded to your computer and opened. At that point, the software will kick in, inspect the attachments for viruses, and notify you of it's findings.
 
Your best bet is to just not open any emails from individuals with whom you are not familiar. Also disregard emails from people you know where the email subject line is something odd or atypical. Many of today's viruses operate on Microsoft's email address book, systematically working their way through the contact list, and emailing itself to the unsuspecting recipient.
