Re: farming in clay

Chris,

It was me that wrote about digging pits in clay. I found they act like a well and collect water in the bottom of the pit. Just my personal experience. I add gypsium and leaves to help keep the clay loose, and manure will help. I wouldn't trade my patch for anything, it just takes a couple of years to get the soil right. I add a lot of potting soil and the peat moss keeps the clay loose also. I hope this helps.

Subject: farming in clay

i seen someone else write about digging pits in clay rotting there roots i dont believe i had this problem although  i dug 4 huge pits in my backyard  6-8 feet round and at least 4 feet deep  then i filled them with pure compost made from yard waste  and added neptune to the mix it was a deep rich black compost and my plants really grew nice but i got them out really late and probally didn't have the best seeds but i got about a 200 pounder and i planted very late june so my question is this  is my soil now as good as can be or can i still improve it  i plan on adding a small layer of compost over my patch and im going to add a bunch of worms to the area but other than that is there anything else i can do to grow the best possible plant soilwise i use neptune to fertilize and i use unclorinated water to water the plants  any sujestions please write me
