RE: pumpkins DIGEST V1 #225

Hello all!
Fantastic festival in Allardt this weekend. Wallace Simmons won
again (see pictures) at 817 pounds. Not as big as more northerly sites,
but very respectable. Am trying to develop a "southern strain" AG that
is heat/ humidity tolerant with thicker walls. Any suggestions and/or
seed available?

Thanks,

Joe Punpkin

Detailed results by site are coming in a little sluggish. We will be

Please send site results to ezpumpkin@aol.com. Or, post them on the

Also, please send pictures of 1000+ pounders to me for inclusion into

I went to the weigh-off in Anamosa and noticed carpet on many of the
pallets. I grew my pumpkins on pallets this year, and was wondering if
people just use carpet on pallets for transportation, or if they grow
pumpkins on carpet covered pallets. I would be concerned with mold on
the carpet, but see the benefit to a smoother underbelly of the pumpkin.
Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Duncan,

Sorry, I accidently hit send before adding that I believe it is a NY
record.

It is the largest ever at Clarence. Elmira has not had a 1000 pounder
yet.
Amagansett has not had on bigger.

I have not received Oswego results from yesterday yet. So, there is the
possibility there. I know they had a problem with their scales and had
to move the
weigh off to the port authority. (See Rick I's post). When I get them, I
will
let you know.

Stay tuned.

And now the rest of the story...

In front of about 5000+ people, with about a dozen of the big pumpkins
to go, the scale malfunctions. After about an hour of fiddling and
fooling around, and don't forget sweat...lots of sweat...it was decided
to cart the pumpkins to the Hospital to weight them accurately at
another certified scale. Because not all the growers were able to
witness their pumpkins being weighed and also the fact that a lot of
them were weighed twice and the numbers were different, there is a small

amount of doubt in some of us to the actual weight. I have no problem
with the placements as I am sure we were all on a level playing field,
but sometimes we are actually competing against our selves. I would
really like to know the true weights if for no other reason than seed
selection and science. Of course, all of this pales in comparison to
the all the people who came to see the big pumpkins and never saw any
being weighed and never had their photo op.

Please people...back up scales...

Don Crews

Matt,

The carpet was for transportation purposes. Speaking from the
standpoint of some who helped transfer pumpkins for weighing at Canby
yesterday, carpet sucks! Very hard to slide a pumpkin onto or off of
carpet. If something smooth such as an anchored tarp or other "slick"
material is over it makes the job of those getting these things to the
scale much easier!

Good Job all!

God Bless,

I went to the weigh-off in Anamosa and noticed carpet on many of the
pallets. I grew my pumpkins on pallets this year, and was wondering if
people just use carpet on pallets for transportation, or if they grow
pumpkins on carpet covered pallets. I would be concerned with mold on
the carpet, but see the benefit to a smoother underbelly of the pumpkin.
Any thoughts?

Thanks,
