RE: 39% over estimate

Look at the Wentzell seed in the AGGC. If it has shown to be heavy on a
regular basis, I think you are wise to try using those seeds next year.
Also look at what others have grown from that seed. There may already be
some big ones; so crossing it with another big & heavy genetic fruit would
be ideal! Keep in mind that there may be other factors for how heavy that
went, such as measuring errors, weather conditions or something you fed it.

Good luck!

Subject: 39% over estimate

I've mentioned this to a few growers, but wanted to solicit feedback
from the group. I grew a 575 wentzell this year, my first year as a
grower. I was actually using it as a test plant to practice starting
seeds indoors. I never had intended to actually use the plant, but when
it came time to kill it, I couldn't bring myself to do it, and planted
it in the backyard with no soil prep in clay soil.

I crossed it with itself, and got a 213lb pumpkin (193.2 weighed at
Anamosa a week after picking). It taped out at 192 inches/153lbs OTT,
being as absolutely generous as possible in my estimates. According to
my calculations, that is 39% over estimate. Would there be any
benefit/logic to crossing its seed next year with a really really big
pumpkin in hopes that I can get a really really big pumpkin that is 39%
over estimate? Or should I start with fresh seed next year.

Thanks,

Matt
