saving seeds

Could someone please tell me the best way to save seeds for next year. I'd really like to grow some plants next year from my 805 Pukos - 1373 Dueck cross.

I tried saving some from last years pumpkin but nothing sprouted this year. The seeds were very pale and most of them had nothing inside when I cracked them open. Were they not mature enough?
