RE: pumpkins DIGEST V1 #398

Tad here (formerly with the Cub Scouts) Jim Martin in Hayward, are
you on this digest distribution. I no longer have access to the field
at the church in Hayward where I was trying to grow pumpkins.

Is there anything you need help with, My neighbor is a bee keeper. If
you need bees and have enough room, let me know. (you probably hand
pollinate)

Have you ever tried to grow a large Zucchini for the Hayward Zucchini
festival?

Tad

We had a beautiful day in Half Moon Bay yesterday! We thought that
California may pull it off but in the end Joel Holland won with a 1229
lb
beauty. (Joel won last year with a 1229 lber also!!!!- now that is
amazing!) Here are the top ten results.........

2nd Leonardo Urena Napa, Ca 1181 lbs
3rd Jack Larue Tenino, Wa 1141 lbs
4th Pete Glasier Napa, Ca 1127 lbs
5th Jim Martin Hayward, Ca 1059 lbs
6th Virgil Brown Napa, Ca 1003 lbs
7th Jim Sherwood Mullino, Wa 961 lbs
8th Shellie Rivard Rochester, Wa 936 lbs
9th Neal Leland Canby, Wa 926 lbs.

Before weigh-off season ends, we ought to acknowledge the accomplishment
of
John Sach of Whittier, whose 908-pound 7th place pumpkin at Elk Grove on
10/1 is probably the record for Southern California.
Mike Brock, you keep the records - has any So Cal grower ever done
better?
Pirate, Troy, do you know?

Are you saying it was weighed on 10/01 ?? and then entered again at Elk
Grove, if I read this right, no fruit can be allowed to be competive
that
was previously entered at another weigh off. Seems to be standard rule
at
most weigh offs . Please correct me if I got this wrong. Cliff Picketts
had
the biggest pumpkin grown on PEI this year, weighed it at Windsor N.S on
10/01, was beat with the one he brought to PEI weigh off by Bill
VanSchuppen
a week later, he made his choice & lost, he could have brought the
bigger
one ,so Bill wins all the marbels. Been there done that, please correct
me
if I'm wrong. A 908 is a great achievement, need to be praised for what
it
did where it did it, but in no way take away from the true winners at
Elk
Grove where it placed 7th. At Elk Grove it's a 7th placed fruit & if
that's
one of the offical sites in Ca then it should stand as such. The view
from
here.

Hello, Mr Bill Van!
No, I'm sorry to have been misunderstood.
The Elk Grove weigh-off was held on 10-1 by the rules. Mr Sach placed
7th.
His pumpkin at 908 pounds was far from the CA record, set that day by
Leonardo Urena's 1200.5 pounder.
But since California spans more degrees of latitude than any other
state, I
felt it was worth acknowledging the accomplishment of someone growing at
the
approximate latitude of Georgetown, South Carolina.
Respectfully,
Kathie
