Phillip, with my limited success in the past, I would advise you to  
prioritize!!! Your major prblm with low weight was prbly not soil compaction but  the 
mildew. You must carry out a preventative program...once you see it, it is  
too late....not completely, but prevention is best. 
 The only suggestion I can give for avoiding compaction, is a  pre-planned, 
pruning pattern, every other secondary, alternating from the right  side and 
the left side of the main vine, need to be cut off...leaves room for  boards, 
and therefore access to spray for mildew. No idea how big your patch is,  which 
is a factor, as to whether this is something you could do or not. Hope  this 
helps, and remember....you grew one your first year, bigger than my  PB...Peace 
Wayne....next year will be my 4th....Grow 'em  BIG!!!
