I haven't seen a post but many of you may already know, Hugh Wiberg has
passed away. He got me into Giant Pumpkin growing in the 1970's before
Atlantic Giant was available to us. He would be a regular on WBZ radio
out of
Boston on the WBZ Countryside Program. He sold seeds to a cross between
Hungarian Giant Squash & possibly a Big Max. All the proceeds went to
the
Boston Children's Hospital. He recruited me to stuff envelopes &
distribute
the seeds. In 1978 I grew my first which was 212 lbs. Although everyone
did
not always agree on how everything should be run he got us started around
here. There was a write up in the Boston Globe today about Hugh but I
have
not seen it yet. I learned of his passing through the Topsfield Fair.
He
will be missed & has many first to his credit including the Topsfield
Weigh Off. Hopefully he is growing Giant Pumpkins elsewhere now, maybe I
will
see him again.
