AGPVS Info for Jeanie Dixon

Hi Jeanie

Thank you for your enquiry about the Australian Giant Pumpkin &
Vegetable Society Inc. The AGPVS was formed in 1996 as it was felt
that it was time Australian had their own official support and weighing
group. Our pumpkin weights are not near as heavy as our Northern
Hemisphere cousins, but we are improving. It is the AGPVS's aim to
encourage giant pumpkin growing and competition throughout Australia.

Our first competition back in April 1997 saw two sites, and for the
forthcoming season about to start soon, we will have 4 sites, so
competition and interest is growing steadily. We are also having a
competition with the Pumpkins of New Zealand to find the champion from
our two countries. We are looking forward to the challenge.

Membership is open to anyone, $20 Aus p.a. The AGPVS soon hope to have
it's own homepage up and running.

The growing season in Australia starts in October and finishes in April.
I have been heavily involved in promoting giant pumpkin growing in
Australia since the late 1980's. This will be my husband George's and
my 10th season at growing giant pumpkins. We were Australian Champions
for 4 of those years 1988-1991, and this year won the Victorian
Competition with our best ever pumpkin which weighed 200.8kgs, about
441lbs I think. We held the Australian Squash Record from 1992 to 1996,
loosing it this year.

I put out a small quarterly newsletter "Pumpkin Vines" through our small
mail order business Atlantic Seeds, which I mail out to Australian giant
pumpkin enthusiasts and a few overseas enthusiasts in the US, Canada and
Germany. I try and give as many growing hints etc as possible, and all
the news from the giant pumpkin world. Contributions most welcome.

I have enjoyed reading all the points of view and hints from everyone in
the group, and all the friendly help we have received from many people
in the group. We will be planting our seeds soon, and I am hoping with
all the great things we have learnt since coming into the group, we will
grow our heaviest pumpkin ever. Very hot weather is predicted for our
part of the world this summer, we had a hot summer last year, which I
feel helped us get our best ever pumpkin.

I would like take this opportunity to wish everyone who is weighing off
this weekend a very successful competition. I look forward to hearing
the results.
