That SPECIAL Name

Ok, now I think I get it.  Someone correct me if this is wrong:

The seeds get their names from the owners who plant them.  

So, say a Greer 1016 is from Mr. Greer's 1016 pound pumpkin?  

Geez, I feel silly!  If this is true, then what happens when
say...a Mr. Jones plants a Greer, he got from Mr. Zehr?  Would
Mr. Jones' pumpkin be a "mutt"?

I know you all are laughing at me now!  :)
