I am an orthopedic technologist (cast man) at Children's Hospital in
Seattle. This list has really helped me over the past 9 months as well. I
grew my pumpkins this year at a suburban county pea patch garden site this
year. Great soil but too many weed seeds and too far from home. I'll be
trying to grow in my backyard next year if I can convince my wife that we
don't really so much lawn. (She may go for it as it would keep me at home
more, she was half convinced I had a girlfriend I was seeing instead of
caring for the pumpkins.) For those who wondered about Hans and Franz,
Hans went to the Puyallup Fair in early September and weighed in at 141 lbs.
Franz went to the Carnation weigh-off and checked in at 203 lbs. (Third
smallest.) I'm maintaining Mr. October on the vines for the PNWGPG
weigh-off on October 25 at the Auburn supermall. It is from the same plant
as Hans and Franz and maybe a little heavier than Franz. The skin is in
better shape than the others and that is why I left it on the vine. I have
three other smaller pumpkins on a second plant that are holding up well
also. One will be going to the weigh-off at the feed store where I got the
seed from and the others ought to make really nice large Jack O'Lanterns.
All in all a good
season for a relative beginner.
I want to send a big thank you to all the experienced growers who helped out
and answered my questions throughout the season, and also to the other
inexperienced growers who asked a lot of questions I didn't think to. It
was nice to finally meet some of you at the Carnation weigh-off and I look
forward to meeting others at Auburn. I'm not even done with my harvest and
I'm already planning and getting excited about what next year will bring.
Good Growing Everyone,

PS Kristina you count too as long as you tried.

I've been on this mailing list for about 9 months now and have benefited
greatly. I have learned a great deal.
I am a software developer by trade and am curious: do giant pumpkin
growers usually have agriculturally-based jobs or do they come from all
walks of life? What does everyone do for a living?
Mike
