Re: What should be done to help next years crop?

  My suggestion  after growing these monsters for weigh-offs the past 5
years is to hold off on the soil test at this time. Yes, add the manure and
some greensand (slow release potassium). till that in and plant a cover
crop . In the early spring when the cover crop is about 1-2 feet high add
compost and till in with the cover crop. After the cover crop has broke
down,  get a soil test. Please understand I am not an expert in this field.
Just an experienced grower and there are many different approaches and
theories as to how to prepare the soil for these heavy feeders. I'm sure
some of the heavy hitters are going to answer your questions too, however
at the moment they are at the Half Moon Bay Weigh-Off. 
Weigh-off time was to start at 8 AM this morning.
