Dear Monster , Bill, et, all:
It probably was not the bird seed that was turning your soil under the
bird feeder into a rich worm bed. It was guano - bird droppings, one of
the best fertilizers known.
If you have problems with unwanted bird seed germinating under your bird
feeder - do not use an herbicide - this could poison the birds. Don't
waste your time attempting to pull weeds under the bird feeder. Use
organic methods to rid weeds. 1. boil a pail of water, throw it under the
bird feeder and turn those new spouts into cooked spinach. 2. Spray those
sprouts with vinager.
As for using / composting dog waste - don't! Same goes for waste from all
carnivorous animals including humans. Their waste is full of dangerous
patagens. Dangerous to you and maybe even to your plants. Most composting
methods will cause these nasty bugs to grow and spread X 1000. Even doing
hot composting will not assure the Dog Doo pathagens are killed.
A good combination of yard wastes like green grass clippings and dry
leaves, etc. makes the best compost. The greater the diversity of the
materials used the higher the quality of the compost. Cow manure very good
if added to your other compost. Horse manure is better. Rabbit is better
yet. Again these manures should only be additives to your compost pile.

Remember - compost happens
