Hi, I've been away for awhile so pardon me if this is old news.
I'm a retired singer/songwriter with a BFA in creative writing. Married to
a Canadian rock star (who earns enough so I COULD retire...). Moved to a
five-acre place in British Columbia's Gulf Islands and started in
immediately on my "dream garden". Deer-fenced, about a quarter-acre in
size, I grow many kinds of squash, Delicata and Sweetmeat are my
favourites, six varieties of beans (my pole Kentucky Wonders took grand
prize and the "Best Bean" trophy at the Fall Fair this September, she said
proudly) loads of garlic, onions, lettuce, herbs of all types, eggplant,
heirloom tomatoes (six varieties, all of which were destroyed by our
northwest tomatoes blight, but not before I managed to can six quarts of
them), potatoes, carrots, radishessunflowers, cutting flowers including
dahlias, nicotiana, poppies, statice, gladiolas, etc. Fruit includes
grapes, many types of apples, pears, plums, peaches, nectarines, walnuts.
The pumpkins were almost an accident. I bought a children's kit in a bag
called "Children's Pumpkin Patch" that listed three varieties on it: Baby
Bear (none germinated), Jack O'Lantern, and Connecticut Giant. It was for
my grandsons, but they never visited me long enough to do anything with it,
so I just went ahead and planted them. Had an internet crash-course in
pumpkin growing courtesy this group and the Ohio State Extension info. Got
three large pumpkins (all around the 110 pound mark) won second prize in
the Fall Fair (because my pumpkin got demoted to the squash category and
lost to a larger "Show King") And now I've got the pumpkin bug!
