Gary:

I had a thought once similar to yours, to cut a small hole in the display
pumpkin, take the seeds, and fill it with concrete.   How long do you think
it would take for it to rot???  They wouldn't be able to carry it away, and
they certainly would get sore trying to smash it.  

Maybe I'll try it next year.....
