Just starting to grow pumpkins

I have just started growing pumpkins last year with my father, and we did
not have much success.  The largest one was 2 lbs.We used seeds from a
local garden center.  I have no idea what type they were.   I joined this
list to see what weI could do to grow larger pumpkins next year.  The
farm where we grew them was 10 miles from my house, and there is no water
supply at the farm. We had to haul water to the  patch in large barrels
during the dry season. We can only get to the farm once every week.  Our
goal is to grow a pumpkin over 100 lbs. Is it possible to grow a 100 lbs
pumpkin in Nebraska under these circumstances?  What type of seed would
best be suited for these conditions?  I am not trying to grow a record
breaker, just something large enough for my son to show off to his
friends.
