Re: By-By Pumpkin

Michael,

The pumpkins I was referring to are "Rouge Vif d'Etampes" also known as
cinderella or French pumpkins. The are heirlooms and are known for fruits
which are quite flat, burnt orange to red, with deep ridges. According to
published sources they grow up to 1 to 2 feet in diameter in
approximately 110 days.

My wife is the one who has been growing them for the last two years. This
was my first year of growing Atlantic Giants. This years French pumpkins
were grown from seeds harvested from last years crop so there is no
chance of contamination of the seeds which produced this years crop.

As far as the purity of this years crop, I doubt that there was any
crossing with the Atlantic Giants (if that is even possible I'm not a
farmer or a botanist) since I grew the Atlantic Giants in the front yard
and my wife grew the French pumpkins out back. They were separated by
over 100 feet of lawn, the house, and rear yard deck. As if they are C
maxima or whatever I couldn't tell you.

According to my wife this variety has been around for hundreds of years
and was supposedly grown for soup. She has made outstanding pumpkin bread
and cookies from them.

I currently am drying approximately 100 seeds from an 18 inch diameter
1997 pumpkin. They should be completely dry in another 2 weeks or so. We
also have other 1997 pumpkins which we haven't processed yet so
additional seeds will be forthcoming. We also have some seeds remaining
from 1996 pumpkins which had no other pumpkins growing nearby.

Let me know if you are interested in some seeds.
