RE: MANURE USE

There is an excellent article on using manure to its best advantage, in an
on-line book called Organic Gardener's Composting by Steve Solomon.
However, the adress is 3 miles long and will not fit into this posting. I
tried it before and it is now in the archives where the URL does work.

Solomon says that manure should be composted before it is put on the
garden. And, manure placed directly into the soil is fine for field crops,
but the practice is a waste of a magnificent resource if intended for a
high intensity garden.

He also talks about long manure, short manure, fresh manure, the difference
between horse, cow, chicken, rabbit, etc. (I use rabbit and chicken stuff
myself. I get it from local 4H 'ers)

Although the title suggests the work is all about organic techniques,
Solomon actually recomends using chemical fertilizers to stimulate
naturally fertile soils to release their nuterients.

Anyone who is using or thinking about using manures on their pumpkin patch,
or wishing to learn more about composting should check this out.

(the URL is here and will take you to Solomons on-line book, again it will
not fit in this e-mail forum, but for some reason it works in the archives)

The URL takes you to the table of contents.
