I have had about the same luck as you my plant was killed  by two successive frosts, sept 22 and 23. My only cosolation was that my pumpkin made it with minor scratches. (It's no giant but it's my first).
 
I also am from eastern Ca.   St-Etienne (15k north of Trois-Rivières).
 
We can only hope that next year our climate will be nicer or that we get an early head start.
