The Smoky Lake event was bigger than ever this year. This was the tenth
anniversary of the event. There were over 2000 spectators at the
weigh-off. There were approximately 80 pumpkins, 12 squash, and 6 or 7
watermelons entered.
My wife and I each entered a pumpkin that came off of the same plant grown
in our small 600 sq. foot plot in our city back yard. This was our one and
only plant. I was disappointed in the weights - not because they were
small, but because they came in way under the estimates given by the
current formulas in use. I believe this is because both fruit were VERY
flat and concave underneath with the walls almost touching inside the
pumpkins by the looks of them. I will have to concentrate on preventing
this next year.
In any case, both were bigger than my previous personal best and both were
in the top 10.
What follows is an UNOFFICIAL list I compiled just from listening to the
results as they were announced. The weights and standings should be
correct, but the spelling of the names could be way off in some cases. I
apologize in advance to anybody who's names I butchered. I have only
included pumpkins over 250 lbs., the top 8 squash, and the top 5
watermelons. The only site record that was broken was for watermelon.
