Hi Belle,
From what we just learned at our local Garden Center, winter rye is the
thing to plant, the owner said that annual rye will die with your first
hard frost, and you will have little to no humus, so plant winter rye
and it will grow all winter, chop it down about a month before you want
to till it in and let it rot. Hope that helps....we weren't sure what
to do either, and Dan is sowing the winter rye as we speak....
