On another note, what to use for a cover crop that won't come back in the
spring. what I have used is old rugs placed in the garden in the fall or
early spring. They are readily available at your local dump or contact your
local flooring store. They will gladly give you their removals when they lay
new rugs. Make sure that they have a weave backing (no rubber) lay them
upside down so they give a more natural appearance to your yard.
If you use this method it won't matter what you plant as a cover crop. It
will be dead in the spring. This is also a good method for establishing a new
garden. If you lay a rug in the fall over grass it will be dead by spring
making roto tilling of the turf extremely easy. If the sounds like too much
fuss just spray your cover crop with round up early in the spring give it
about a week or two to die and roto till it in. There won't be any ill
effects from the round up.
