RE: WA update: off to Canby

Pat,
I kept it shut going there and returning home. What a weigh off, huge
pumpkins, great people, wonderful hosts with a good location.
It's well off the beaten path, but they have plenty there to keep the
family entertained while the growers are showing off their prize
pumpkins. The 836.5 lb. top ten average weight is awesome. Lots of
huge pumpkins at this site. It looks like some were holding back at
Carnation for the bigger purse at Canby, I'm not sure how well that paid
off for some though as there were so many heavy pumpkins there. Pual
Handy is the MAN, two pumpkins over 900 lbs. in one season is
incredible! Has anyone ever done this before? I would have made the top
twenty in Carnation with mine but I didn't expect I could place there.
I waited hoping to gain enough weight to top 400 lbs. on the charts,
that extra week got it to 269" OTT and est 404, Lumpy ended up weighing
25 lbs over at 429 lbs. a new personal best by over 200 lbs. and placed
24th at Canby. I am really pleased with my results this year, Casper
the squash weighed in at 304 and 22 lbs. heavier than the charts, even
if Lumpy had crashed in that last week I would have had a new personal
record. And to add more to the warm fuzzy feeling I was approached by
people there asking ME for seeds. (It was that smooth skin and deep
orange color that made it attractive.) Sorry I didn't get to meet Mike
Stephenson with the big pumpkin with the big hole, it would have been
nice to put a face with the name. Too bad about the hole, it was a
beauty, great effort. My daughter and I had a great time and we will be
sure to return next year with pumpkins or without. I'm left with one
pumpkin in the patch to take to the Auburn, WA supermall on Oct. 24. As
many big ones as I have seen the past two weekends I may be able to
compete there with a 250 pounder. I don't think there are many pumpkins
left unpicked in these parts. What a year! We still haven't heard of
the results from Half Moon Bay today, judging by the size of the tarps
that were never unwrapped in Canby on the back of the LaRue's truck we
should be hearing of some more really big pumpkins going to the scales
later today. Shelly Cramer, Brett Hester, Lincoln Mettler and Kirk
Mombert were also in that caravan headed to California with some big
pumpkins too. I'll post again later with a wrap up report on my season,
and thanks Duncan for providing this forum that allows me to share my
experiences with others who share my enthusiasm for this hobby.
