What's the use of growing giant pumpkins?????

I had an interesting experience riding the bus home from work today. 
People were talking about their hobbies.  I mentioned that I had grown a
360 pound pumpkin this year and got quite a reaction.  People were asking
about how I did it and what I did with it afterward.  I told them that I
really had not done anything with it except collect the seeds.  A woman
asked me "what is the point of growing something that you don't have a
practical use for?" I told her that most hobbies are not utilitarian.  It
was an interesting question that got me thinking.  What is the use of
growing giant pumpkins?  Is it the size?  Is it the competition?  Is it
the novelty? I just know that is fun.  I like to go out to the patch. 
Not weed, not water, just see it grow.  It just feels good.  Who knows,
maybe it doesn't have to be useful.......
