Re: New at this

Richard & Carolyn,

I would get as much Manure as you can and rototill it in with Grass
clippings and leaves, preferably Maple leaves. I use Horse Manure because
it is most accessible to me and I am told that their is less weed seeds in a
Horses diet and is less acidic then Cow Manure. Not real sure about that but
maybe someone else out their can help us with that one. After you rototill
all that in, plant a cover crop like Winter Rye. It will get pretty tall by
spring so you'll have to chop it down a little before rototilling again in
spring. Get a soil test in spring to see what else you need to fine tune
your soil. When you send the test in, specify Atlantic Giant Pumpkins.
To grow an Atlantic Giant, the rule of thumb is about 1000 square feet per
plant. If you don't have that much room you might want to try planting Big
Max. or Prizewinner pumpkins, they are typically about 100 to 150 pounds and
are a little easier to grow.
Their are some really good books available such as " All about Fertilizers,
Soils and water" by Ortho Books and "Vegetable Gardening" by Sunset
Publishing. They describe a lot about soil and amendments.
I would also recommend the two books by Don Langevin " How To Grow World
Class Pumpkins I & II. You can buy both books for $29.95 plus P&S. Call
1-800-985-7878 for Info or ordering.

Another good source is the Pumpkins Archives Search List.
