I've noticed these quite often as well.
After dissecting a few I found that pumpkins crack from the inside rather
than from the outside. And the cracks also almost always form inside of
large deep ribs. It just seems backwards doesn't it? The way my mind
works a growth crack from unstable growth seems like it should form on the
outside.....but it doesn't!
