Once you cut it from the vine it starts to lose weight. The very
competative growers cut the vine about 2' from the stem on each side and
then stick the vine ends in gallon milk jugs with water. If you aren't that
worried about a few ounces then just cut the vine on each side of the stem
whithin an inch of the stem. The pallet should be covered to keep from
scraping off the bottom of the pumpkin. I've use remnants of carpeting I I
got from the dumpster of a floor covering store and tacked that onto the
pallet. I've also used cardboard. Both work fine. If you have a lifting
tarp you could leave that under the fruit to make the lifting teams job
easier. Make sure you pumpkin is well secured in the bed of the truck or
trailer. You don't want something that big and heavy to keep moving if you
have to make a sudden stop. Good Luck.
