Cucumber Larva

I was told I could put LYE on my patch this fall to kill off the
cucumber beetles larva..the lye would burn them......and  traces of the
lye would be gone by spring.
Any -one know any-thing about this....I know my grandmother used it
outdoors...for their outhouses...never seemed to bother the grass.
I had a major infestation this year and was diligent on my
spraying...nothing worked...has any-one a well guarded secret they would
like to share...on these pests.
