fall prep

Weighoffs are over and it's time to put the plot to sleep here in northern
Minnesota. Last night I tilled in 5 yards of manure and 3 bales of
straw/hay. Bales work great for plant material if you have access to them. I
break them open and run my tractor mower over them several times to break it
down to just clippings. I've found if you don't break it down, it gets
wrapped around tines of tiller. It also ensures a rapid breakdown in spring.
I added 4 pounds barn lime to soil(35'x35'), and also 1 yard of fresh(this
summers) horse manure. Some will say green manure is a killer, but if added
in fall, it hasn't done me any damage in past. Added 8 bags leaves, and
tilled 2 times. I created this plot 3 years ago and had few worms in it
then, now I have half dozen in each shovel full I turn over. This should be
a good analyzer of how your soil is. No nutrients means no worms. I stayed
totally organic this year, and had best year ever with fruits of 837 and
799. Just a few thoughts to help you out this fall.Happy Growing!
