Polly: 16.5 inches pretty decent you beat mine by 1/2 inch well should i say
the
birds and mine!
the birds planted a sunflower smack in the middle of the garden while it only
grew 119 inches tall the head on it measured 16 inches across and the base
of
the stalk was 19.5 inches in diameter it looked like a tree and i had to use
an
ax to cut it down!!
Sure wish i knew where the birds get their seed?

I know. They get it from my bird feeder. Every year, I find seedlings under
the
feeder. I have never left them grow. The lawn mowers clips them off each
week.
I have tried tp plant some of the assorted sunflower seeds I find in bird
feed but they never get a chance to germinate. The neighborhood squirrels
dig them up before they sprout and eat them. This year, I planted some
decorative sunflowers along the west side of my pumpkin patch. I start them
indoors. I was amazed to find that the south edge height was about half the
size of the north edge when they reached full growth. Obviously, ny freshly
rototilled and fertilized patch was not uniform. I'll plan to do better next
year. Some extra sunflower plants that I planted in my ordinary garden were
much shorter than the shortest of those at the pumpkin patch border. We
enjoyed watching the goldfinches et al. feeding on all of them for over a
month.. They rooted so well that the strong west wind did not affect them..
Today. I plant to cut one of the pumpkins still in my patch. It is 250 lbs+
UOW.
Wonder how much work that will take. Four others in the front of my house
were given a reprieve for at least three more weeks. I was kind of hoping
someone woould steal one or two <g>.No luck!
