A pair of Californians claimed Half Moon Bay's pumpkin prize and set a record to boot.
At the Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off this morning, Jon Hunt said he and his fellow winner
Charlie Armstrong became the first state residents in nearly a decade to win the coastal
contest, with their 991-pound behemoth from Sacramento County.
The proud growers said they got a break in the weather this year after 10 years of toiling
in the Elk Grove pumpkin patch, with a cooler set of temperatures.
"They weren't into the 100's everyday like we usually have," Hunt said.
The winners take home a nearly $5,000 prize of $5 for every pound.
Scott Krause of Woodside, has the biggest San Mateo County pumpkin at 451 pounds,
while Larry Centoni of Half Moon Bay grew a 372-pounder to win the coast-side prize.
The prize winners will be on display at this weekend's festival in Half Moon Bay.
