Dried manure is ok if its put in the ground in the fall and over winters.
Remember that chicken manure from Europe has been probably under chicken
cage of layers for quite awhile due to application restrictions, high
water tables, and lack of suitable ground. Chicken manure in this state
even dried is raw and powerful and should be composted. Best if it is
piled, wetted, covered and allowed to heat and compost for two or three
weeks. By stirring occasionally, the manure goes through its heat cycle
sometimes heating up to 170*F and at least 145*F or so, this kills any
bad organisms. By covering the Nitrogen and other components are trapped
and not allowed to escape into the environment. Leaves, lawn clippings
can be added. What you need for the process is manure, carbon source,
and between 30 -40 % moisture. Carbon source such as shavings, straw,
rice hulls, leaves etc. If you don't feel comfortable with the end
product get it tested, probably a good idea any how. Usually my turkey
manure on confined birds, cleaning annually, using rice hulls and
shavings tests out as follows. 1997, 3.02%N, 2.98%P, 6.83% p2o5, 4.36% K,
5.25% k2o, .61 %S, .75% Mg, 3.65% Ca, .77% Na, and 32.37 % moisture on a
dry matter basis. As with any manure especially poultry, one needs to
watch for over fertilizing for the salts and phosphorous levels can get
out of control. Any poultry producer should have these figure and be
willing to provide them to you when purchasing fertilizer. Hope this
helps.
