Re: Need seeds for "Polio fight"

Dear list members:

Please join me in fighting "Polio". I realize that some of you might feel
that it is old news. But this disease is still creating the same problems in
some of the third world countries it did for many of us in this country years
ago. Please see the letter below. You may know someone that had their
schooling interupted by rest at home or their family life disrupted when
several members had to rest and rebuild their bodies with exercises, day in
and day out. Many of you know this first hand or know someone who does.

Help me by sending your spare "Atlantic Giant" seeds for the people who
participate in the EBAY auction. I'll see that they are distributed
properly. SEND TO: WPC, 14050 Rt 62, Collins, NY 14034 Thank you for making
this promotion work for the Fight Against Polio. I'll get out more
information on the EBAY #, etc. when I know it. Ray Waterman

RE: Halloween Auction on EBAY

To the Worldwide Auction Community,

The World Pumpkin Confederation is proud to endorse the most innovative
"Pumpkins Against Polio" auction being launched on EBAY today.

The Pumpkin being auctioned is a world class pumpkin and would most likely
have taken 5th place this year at our Annual Pumpkin Weigh-in held on the
first Saturday in October. This colossal pumpkin was grown by WPC member
Norman Craven who held the Guinness Book World Record in 1993 for the a
Pumpkin that weighed 837lbs.

I also commend the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and all of the
work they have done on the behalf of Polio eradication, and congratulate
them on the completion of the Documentary, "Stories of Polio, A Fight to the
Finish."

Many people I know have suffered from Polio including my mother-in-law and
friends from college. I am 50, and for my age group, Polio was very real
threat. We are fortunate today that none of us have to worry about
contracting this terrible disease.

Most kids in this country are unaware of the fear we all lived with just a
short time ago. So I think it is a brilliant idea to create "Pumpkins
against Polio" at Halloween to educate kids during one of their favourite,
fun holidays. I hope parents will take the time to use this "play on words"
to remind their kids just how lucky they are and how some kids in Asia and
Africa are not so lucky.

I created the Pumpkin Confederation 20 years ago with the goal of helping
keep kids off the street and providing them with a project, and a goal of
growing a giant pumpkin. People are now growing giant pumpkins around the
world and I often send seeds as part of my "Pumpkins for Peace" campaign to
remote countries, most recently Zimbabwe.

Again, I am happy to throw my support behind "Pumpkins Against Polio" and
hope to join the auction again next Halloween to sell off an even bigger
pumpkin. Hopefully we are only a few auctions away from wiping this scourge
off the face of the earth.

Sincerely,

Ray Waterman
President
World Pumpkin Confederation
