Des Moines, WA Oct. 16 weigoff results
This turned out to be a nice little weighoff with some fairly large pumpkins
for the numbers that were there and the type of growing season that we had
in the Northwest. If you are a Northwest grower and passed on this event
you missed out. They paid to ten places and only had 14 "Official" entries.
Two were weighed and then withdrawn from competition.
Checking in with the largest pumpkin of the day and also one of the
prettiest with a nice orange color and fairly smooth skin was Brett Hester
with a personal best and his first pumpkin over 800 lbs. Heres the
rankings.
1. Brett Hester 850.5
2. Joel Holland 733
3. Steve Radich 727
4. Lincoln Mettler 701
5. Sherry LaRue 651
6. Geoff Gould 650
7. Geneva Emmons 605
8. Jack LaRue 564
9. R. Hepler 508
10. Chris Michalec 328
11. Vern Lawrence 255 (Winner of the Beast award)
12. Kathy Mettler 233
13. Aaron Krogh 225
14. J. Breland 202 ( Winner of the Beauty award)
The Beast that Vern brought was truly one of the ugliest pumpkins I have
ever had the misfortune to see. It appeared as if it had been dredged from
the bottom of Puget Sound. It's skin looked diseased and it had growths on
it that more than vaguely resemble barnacles. It was very appropriate for a
"Haunted House" weighoff site. This was a really nice event considering it
was put together on very short notice, only three weeks. It could have
benefited from a bit more advertising and exposure, but they have a whole
year to work on putting together the next one. This site has a lot of
potential with enthusiastic sponsors.
