Yea, the reason things float is because of the buoyant force of the fluid
they are in such as a pumpkin in water. The buoyant force of water is
greater than the force of gravity on the pumpkin. If the pumpkin were more
dense it would sink if in peaces

Things float because of buoyancy -- the same reason battleships float. I've
found a Website that may help (I felt guilty for my earlier, smartypants
answer).
Anyway, this site describes an experiment in floating a golf ball. It
probably describes the forces that hold up pumpkins, as well. You might
have to draw some conclusions.

I also think the air trapped in the cells and cavity of the pumpkin might
help the pumpkin float -- kinda like the air in our lungs.
