Re: Presumptous
Mike,
first what's IMHO ?
If you were offended that your seeds dropped of
someones list... well then just drop them an email and
ask them what happened ? and if you felt dished ..
well then you don't ever have to give that person any
seeds ever again.
As for big seed collections...
1) many of us do have more seeds than we will ever
plant. And maybe we should do more and be willing to
share them with new people on the list and others.
Many good seeds will never get plants.
on the other hand ...
2) why not ? if one want to collect them.. and
growers are willing to give them the seeds... then who
cares ?
last year i tried to collect a lot because i was
hoping that after this season i might have a proven
winner in there somewhere ! And in all reality i think
there are more than enough seeds to go around. Only
a certain few have a high demand. Most are very very
low demand. So who cares if poeple have more than they
will use - everyone does - expect for maybe the newer
people to the list. So lets open things up to the new
people and all will be happy, right ?
one way to slow down the mass collection is buy
selling... if you really want it then you can pay a
small fee to get it. if you are just collecting then
you will be less willing to pay for them. .... which
is what you have seen with some of the high demand
seeds. Other high demand seeds the grower has elected
to give away. And we can't force people to be one way
or the other. Just like we can't force people to only
have a certain size collection. (even if we came up
with some rule - which we never would be able to do
because there would be many differing views) So you
can express you opinion but in reality everyone else
can do as they choose.
I think it boils down to the grower- he can give or
sell, or not, to whomever he wants too.
and That's that.

PS- Mike I still have the 434 seeds you gave me...
and the one I planted this year was replaced with a
different back up plant because the 434 developed a
really big vine split and never really took off. In
all honesty I probably won't ever plant them.. do you
want them back?

I have bitten my tongue on this one for some time but
you have both touched
a nerve here.
OK, please follow this link for an example of what
appears to Me to be
excessive seed collection:
http://home.cyber-quest.com/rocky.r/seedlibrary.htm
This list of what appears to be about 200 seeds from
Other growers seems to
fit the profile.
All due respect but once upon a time the free seeds I
sent this grower
appeared on this list. They are no longer on this
list, yet this grower has
never planted them. I can't help wonder what happened
to them:
1) 3 of mine for 1 of ???
2) Handed out to some first year grower because ?????
3) Roasted????
4) ????
The grower exampled here has given His seeds Free to
anyone too. However
that act of kindness, IMHO, seems overshadowed by the
mere size of his
collection of other growers seeds, and the
impossibility of his planting
much more than 25% of them in a lifetime, yet he still
campaigns for
additional free seeds from this year's giants. And
yes, having a few more
seeds than you can plant makes sense to a certain
point as you hone your
inventory, but this list seems over the top on that
issue.
IMHO charging for seeds may make sense so that seeds
requested get planted
rather than collected like, well, baseball cards.
Finally let me say that the above comments are not
intended as a personal
attack of this, or any, grower on any issue other than
what is, IMHO,
excessive seed collection. The comments above should
be read not unlike
reading a baseball player's RBI's. If the profile
fits, it fits, and no
personalities are ever involved.
