To add to your soil use cow manure in the fall and spring. Twice as much as you think you'll need, then add more and get a soil test. Also I read on a Canadian growing sight that plenty of maple leaves are also good. So rake the leaves and put them in your patch.
I am a first year grower but  I read the world record was grown on a plot with 7 tons of manure mixed in the soil. That is a must.
If I am incorrect someone please comment.
