Well if you think you have to bring home your the best judge.  If you can
get some of the vine both sides of the stem  with roots would be best
....but I have never done it.   but see if you can't get them to pick up
water an nutrients at home.  Shade the pumpkin!!!! and leaves for a while
until they take.  Good experiment!!

If that fails keep a moist towel with a light bleach
solution................and shade ......best of luck!! MB
