growth observations

As we reach the conclusion of this years growing, many of us look to our
patches for signs of how we can improve for next year. The pumpkin I had
on the pumpkin cam had incomplete protection from the sun. What was not
obvious to the pumpkin cam viewers was the fact that the pumpkin was
noticeably bigger on the side that was exposed to late afternoon sun. That
side had much bigger ribs and there was cantalouping only on the exposed
side! I am now examining the squash that has replaced it and it shows the
same appearance. The shaded side is smooth and shinny while the exposed
side has nodular ribs and cantalouping.

My weather has been very cool and I assume this is a temperature
differential effect but who knows. I told Alan Reynolds about this and
tells me his fruit had thicker walls on the sunlight sides.

Anyone else notice this type of growth? Most times we are worried about to
hot but what to do when it is cold....
