Hello everyone,
I am a novice AG grower (or can I actually say that) and am so happy to
find a place where I can bounce ideas off others with "MUCH" more experience
than myself. For the last few days I have read all of your wonderful
questions and responses, and thank all of you allot of my questions have been
answered. I would like to tell you a little about my background and maybe you
all could help me with a few of my problems. Thank you in advance.
I am an arborist in sunny southern CA and started growing Large pumpkins
seven years ago in the family garden. since i live in a beach city and a long
way from any farm type community I purchased my seeds and fertilizer from the
local "home Depot" nursery dept.The first year I grew a 76.3 then the next a
230.1next a 220.6 then failure for two years due to cracks on the flower end
(What causes that) Then last year a 320 even and a 280.9. I had always heard
of all the 500 LB plus pumpkins and i had pumpkins guestimated in the high
300 that rotted off but couldn't figure out how to grow the "BIG ONES." I
call my self a "novice"due to the fact that only this year I found out about
dill's Atlantic giant pumpkins through purchasing "How to grow world class
giant pumpkins,1and 2" What a wonderful series of books.
I had been growing burpee prize winner seeds and did not realize that
another seed existed. This year I have two dill's on the vine and one well
over the three mark and am real happy. Since I have no kids I teach the
neighbor kids the fine art of horticulture and two of my prized neighbor kids
are growing there own pumpkin patches. we always have a Blast at Halloween!
Well, enough about me here come some questions?????????????????????
I get allot of dew every night due to ocean breezes, etc., and I "CAN
NOT" stop the powdery mildew. I do not have a chemical supply house that I
can purchase from due to about everything but round up is illegal here, any
organic, etc., ideas????????
Does any one know of an on-line or mail order fertilizer company that I
can purchase from.
Has anyone tried to grow a giant pumpkin in a green house/glass house etc.
