HMB fruit measuring

Howdy, fellow Pumpkineers-

I was looking at one of Joel Holland's pumpkin videos, and there
was footage of the Half Moon Bay weighoff (just can't get enough of
that custom "...so haul it up to Half Moon Bay" song! :-) )
For every fruit, while still on the scale, some guy whipped out a
tape and measured the "circumference" *perpendicular to the ribs*.
If the pumpkin leaned at 45 degrees, the measurement was taken
at 45 degrees.

My question is... what is he doing?

He isn't measuring circumference as defined for use with the OTT and
circumference charts, which state that circumference is
measured *parallel to the ground*. So what good is the measurement?
Just for a quick comparison at that one weighoff?
