Subject: Final 746 Scherber update until weighoff results

LAST "CLONE" UPDATE UNTIL THE  FINAL 2001 WEIGHOFF RESULTS
Here is  the final "clone" report before the final weights are in from across the country. This breakthrough experimental project is coming to an end in 4 short weeks, so far, all the Scherber clone growers do not appear to be surpassing last years 1009 pumpkin, which Joe Scherber had pumped out from this very same plant. Growers who I sent clones to this spring and were able to grow one, have helped in propagating pumpkin research that should help to produce some of the best genetic seed strains in the near future. Once the season ends, I'll have time to get into all the details of how everyone's plants did, and how they compared to one another. A lot of interesting questions have already been answered, and more discoveries will be learned once they are finally weighed and carved.

Len Stellpflug, who is growing a 991 Hunt clone, should top the 354 pound mark which that plant produced last season, if he has not already done that at this time. Len should be posting something on Big Pumpkins web site soon, or soon after this season is over Grower experience and proper growing techniques are helpful to have success with these plants, but still, weather, soil, sun, and many other factors have affected how growers results are turning out.

The following growers, as well as where they live, are listed below, with non- alive or alive status:

GERRY GADBERRY : {WASHINGTON}           ALIVE
TOM RORQUAL : {MARYLAND}                      NON- ALIVE
TOM BEACHY : {INDIANA}                     {NO CURRENT UPDATE}
.JIM KILBERT : {PENNSYLVANIA}                ALIVE
LEN STELPFLUG : {NEW YORK}                  ALIVE
NIC WELTY : {OHIO}                                ALIVE
ALEX UMSTED : {NEW MEXICO}              NON- ALIVE
BILL BORSCHEID : {MINNESOTA}}           NON- ALIVE
MARC SAWTELLE : {COLORADO}                ALIVE
JOE SCHERBER : {COLORADO}  }                ALIVE
.SCOTT LEWIS : {COLORADO}                   ALIVE
JAMES KANE : {COLORADO}                   NON- ALIVE

To find out how Gadberry Stellplug, and  Kilbert are doing, visit Big Pumpkins www.bigpumpkins.com  and check out  Gads & Kilr diary entries to get info on those 3 growers. I have posted a couple also {and that's all I had time to do so far!}. Welty has his own web site http://web.raex.com/~ldnwelty/ , not sure if a new update is posted. Joe Scherber's first clone plant got killed May 22, and had to start another, which put him behind pollination schedule, and thus too late to be able to grow anything gigantic from it. Scott Lewis also had a late go as well, and has more than one fruit on the plant, nothing that is too large according to him. I have had a few of my problems early on, but it will still top my personal best {432 pounds last year}, as it is already past that. Not sure if Tom Beachy has one still going or not, I'm waiting to hear from him still. The other growers listed had their plants die on them, except James Kane, who pulled his after using it for a male pollinator to his 808 Holland.

 I am not sure what estimated weights are for everyone, so my next and final post of the year will be the one of interest, with all the final weights of the growers still involved in this years project. Gadberry is proclaiming himself the clone king, as he expects his to be somewhere in the 500 pound range. Everyone has had identical looking plants and pumpkins, except for age differences in the fruit, and everyone's growing results sound identical to mine! More on all that during the winter months! For the time being, I'll just say best of luck to all clone and non- clone growers across the land at whatever weighoff or contest you enter!

To check out "How to keep clones alive through the winter", go to Kevin's "Holmans Hole" web site which can be accessed clicking on http://www.homestead.com/henryholman/files/pumpkin_cloning.html . Big Pumpkins has a link as well at http://www.bigpumpkins.com/ViewArticle.asp?id=31&gid=2  and Bob has some cool stuff at his killer Pumpkin Nook web site... and even made me one of his featured growers  {I am honored!} find that at  http://www.pumpkinnook.com/commune/featpic.htm . Mike Neperney's AGGC site {you can only get to this site using internet explorer, and you need to log in first to access TONS of genetic background info & other cool stuff} has a link also, first go to http://aggc.1wh.com/aggc.asp and log in first.
