Washington Update late September edition

It's been a weird season by the banks of ther Rio Verde. The salmon are
flopping in the river and the pumpkins are flopping in the patch. No
personal best this year unless they weigh a lot heavier than they should.
No frost yet though so they could still squeeze on a few pounds. No splits
yet either and I'm grateful for that. Four pumpkins and one squash remain
in the patch. Three regional weighoffs for the Northwest. Four if you
count Half Moon Bay, but I can't until I feel I have something that makes it
worthwhile for me to drive that far in my tired old truck. Not this year.
The largest pumpkin is still on the 871 Richart, took a 355 from it to the
Puyallup fair on the 7th of this month. Next is the 835 McIntyre two
pumpkins remain just creeping along. This ones gonna get passed by the 723
Bobier. This pumpkins showing the best growth but it's too little too late.
The squash on the 720.5 Welty is done. Intact, but done. I have one backup
on the 835 on a secondary should I have any of the bigger three split. I'm
getting to that point in the season where I don't even want to check on
them. They're not growing enough to get me excited and if they've split
I'll only be disappointed. One thing I have learned this season already is
I still have a lot to learn about growing giant pumpkins.
Good luck to all, orange, white, green and all the colors in between.
I've heard enough about big ones splitting and hope there are no more. 10
days to harvest and counting.
