The first (and hopefully not the last) Los Altos Hills Misfit Weigh-Off
lived up to its billing. Growers from San Jose, Napa and Portola Valley
as well as local neighbors, friends, relatives and passers-by were in
attendance. Even the guy who delivered the pizza got hung up in the
merriment of the moment and did not want to leave.
Two main "Misfits" (and a few smaller pumpkins) were weighed.
Walt Dabel from San Jose claimed the second place prize of two beers
with a nice pumpkin with a vandal hole in the top of it. Walt's misfit
weighed 372.5 lbs.
Taking the "Grand Prize" of one beer was our host Vince Zunino with
his legendary Geneva Electric. GE topped the scale at 971 lbs.
GE's ott was 381" (181 + 101 + 99)
Not only did GE have a hole in the top under the duct tape but she also
had a HUGE hole on the bottom. This hole was about 2 feet long
and 1 foot wide.
You would think with a hole this big that there would be lots of rotten
pumpkin "goop" and junk pouring out the bottom of the pumpkin. I found
it amazing that there was NOT ONE SPECK OF ANYTHING in the sand that was
under GE. It seems that all the rotten innards just vanished in to thin air.
Yep, Geneva Electric continues to mystify !!
Thank You Vince for your hospitality. Hey, this is what pumpkin growing is
all about......nice people, good food, a few beers, lots of laughs and of
course, BIG PUMPKINS. Yep, GE was HUGE even though she went down.....however
we did see few othes lurking in the patch......and they weren't exactly small !!
