RE: regarding rules

1. The pumpkin must have been grown and cared for by the exhibitor? < how
do you judge this rule?

This was the first year that we actually got pumpkins to go grow, last year
out of 22 plants, not one pumpkin made it. We had one start that I fussed
over and it aborted at about volleyball size. I cried.

This year, I worked feverishly to get the seeds started. After the plants
were up, I realized my soil was no good so I bought a total of 50 bags of
compost and worked it in around the plants. It was at this point that my
daughter found the patch; she's 13. She became fascinated with the daily
growth; we hand pollinated our first female together. She "adopted" the
first biggest one we had going and came out every morning and afternoon to
check on it as well as do some weeding. I handled the watering and vine
maintenance.

So who cared about "this" pumpkin the most? Obviously she did, I fuss over
the whole patch, loving them all as a group. But this one was hers. She
entered it in our local Agricultural fair and while no monster coming in at
35 pounds; it was the largest in her age group.

I would say enter it a pumpkin based upon who cares for it the most, whether
by watering or simply affection, with a clear conscious.

Subject: regarding rules

Hi
Was wondering how the rules and regulations are followed at a weigh off.
Especially the rule that the pumpkin has to be grown by the exhibitor. Where
do you draw the line on growing the pumpkin yourself. Do you think children
and adults should compete together? I would say myself, I do about 80 % of
the growing myself. I need help sometimes postioning fruit...and of course a
need people to help me get it to weigh off, also my husband has to help me
make the pumpkin house in fall to prevent frost, but that also benifits his
plant to. I think every grower needs some help...but were does a person
cross the line...like entering 2 pumpkins...husband and wife each enter one,
or entering a pumpkin in childs name..... Just curious to what other growers
thought about this question. My four year old has claimed my biggest pumpkin
as his...he hugs it and says its his pumpkin. Is that all it takes for him
to take it to weigh off and exhibit it as his pumpkin?
