I travel at least three hours to any weigh-off (except this year since John
and I set up one in Columbus). I usually lay the pumpkin on an old sleeping
bag then strap it down with the widest straps available. I haven't used
water jugs or plastic wrap, but I would definitely consider it on a ten hour
trip. I prefer to have my (meager) fruit out so everyone can see it really
well. Since I haven't grown an REALLY big ones, that is one of my sources
of joy...seeing people's faces as they drive past a 300-400 lb fruit.

Of course, pending the pumpkin's survival until the 12th, we're thinking of
hauling it over to the Central Market Weigh Off in the Seattle area.
10 hr Drive, at least - ouch! And, on that note... this will be the first
time transporting a pumpkin out of the county. I'll take any words of wisdom
from those who've done the distance before. I've heard about putting the
vines in water jugs. Would it be of benefit to wrap the fruit in plastic to
withhold water? Or strap pillows around the perimeter? I wonder about how to
stabilize it against any rocking or bouncing in a truck with rough
suspension.
I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks folks.
Kim

It will count. I have to haul mine to Utah because there is not formal
weighoff in Idaho. That is where the Idaho State record was weighed. Where
are you going to take your pumpkin?
