Hi Kim
I've been going to the weigh-offs in Oregon for the last 4 years. I live
on Vancouver Island and I've never had any problems crossing the border.
For me to go to Sauvies Island weigh-off this year will also involve a full
day's travel and an overnight stay Friday night. I have a 4ft x 4ft pallet
which is padded with 3/4 inch foam rubber. The pallet is placed in the truck
so it can't move. The pumpkin is strapped down securely with tie down
straps. Wide ones are the best. I have a tarp to cover the pumpkin which I
can remove at the border if required. So far it hasn't been necessary. Get
ready for some strange looks from border guards though. As far as bouncing,
just stay away from hitting pot holes or speed bumps too hard and of course
don't slam on the brakes or you'll get run over by your pumpkin irregardless
of how well it's secured. By all means, put the end of the vines in a jug of
water. It may save a bit of dehydration.
I am glad to see that you'll be coming to Seattle. It's a new weigh-off
and needs all the support it can get. The prize money is also very good. I
will be there myself also.
