Subject: COMPOST ON VINES

I put compost on top of the vines to keep the plant cool in these hot
North
Carolina weather. We has several inches of rainfall last week and now
the
plant has lost about half its leaves. Is there any way I can stop the
destruction of the entire plant? Should I not have covered the vines?
My
pumpkin is now about 70lbs and we can get growth down here into october.

Would really love to save the plant and continue growth. Any help would
be
greatly appreciated.
