the reason behind having a sound fruit as a
requiremnet has come down through the ages from the
local fairs. If you brought something to the fair it
had (still has) to be of the highest quality. of
quality such that someone would want to buy it.
giant pumpkins have kind of steered away from that
because it has turned into a heaviest weight wins.
but some quality still has to be there. ie- it still
has to be sound.
if you take any other fruit both quality and size
count. take apples for example- if you took some to a
fair. you could bring the largest group of apples ever
grown but if they had a worm holes in them - you
wouldn't win anything.
